Any attempts of Board Members to decrease the duration of the school day should be fought with all your heart and soul. If cuts should be made they should be made at the top, NOT on the backs of students. When we researched this topic we found that many school districts across the country made provisions for teacher collaboration - but the common denominator was that RESPONSIBLE school districts made up for the collaboration time by adjusting the start/end time of the school day. Ex. In Dunlap, they made the start time 8 minutes earlier in the morning so that they could dismiss 1/2 hour early every Wednesday. The duration of the school day remained unchanged.

Trust me, if board members are considering shortening the school day, REPLACE THEM. They are not doing their job protecting the interests of our most vulnerable citizens - our children.

Greetings! Just an update, as of tomorrow, enrollment is now up to 6 students; doubling the original enrollment. There has also been rather extensive interest in enrollment for next year with inquiries coming from the Macomb area as well.

I would like to address one issue that was raised here, and has been repeated elsewhere as well. While I have no doubt that a large portion of those that attended the very first informational meeting were indeed spurred by the closure of RES, Matthew I can assure you that for those of directly involved with the school, that was NOT a driving factor in our decision to see RCCS open. For us, this was simply a matter of choice; being able to provide an educational experience more attuned to traditional values and able to provide much more of an individualized learning experience with one-on-one instruction being the norm as opposed to the exception. I too share your conviction that a viable quality public educational system is vital to the needs of a community, and will always be the educational vehicle for the majority of families. For those who prefer something different however, we would like to think that we provide an option that bridges the gap between traditional public school and home schooling.

My apologies for not commenting earlier; this is actually the first time I stumbled upon this posting.

Comments and suggestions are always welcomed; most of you know how to get in touch with me already, and the official RCCS website should be online very shortly.

Thanks to all in the ocmmunity for your support, it is greatly appreciated. Be sure to attend our Open House to be held at the school from 3:30 - 7:30 on April 28th.

I appreciate your input, Matt. I recognize that the RA has previously covered the AfterDark opening, but, IMO, the actual opening of the club was worth at least a mention somewhere. Perhaps that's redundant.

Regarding the research farm, I see that the article ran again in the "Farmer's Forecast" special edition pull-out distributed with the 3/22 print edition of the RA.
